Nopestalgia scene notes · 1925
What's wrong in 1925? Small-town Main Street, 1925
It is 1925 on Main Street in a small American town. A black Ford Model T is parked outside the drugstore with its striped awning, a newsboy walks by with an armful of papers, two young women in cloche hats and fringed drop-waist dresses stroll arm in arm, and men in straw boaters chat on the corner while a horse-drawn delivery wagon rolls down the street under the telephone wires.
This is the Roaring Twenties. Ford's Model T, built on a moving assembly line, had made car ownership possible for ordinary families, and more than 15 million were built between 1908 and 1927. Radio, jazz, and new fashions were changing daily life, while horses still pulled milk and delivery wagons in plenty of towns.
What belongs in 1925
Every Nopestalgia scene gets a period check before it goes live. Here's what's in this one, and why it fits the year:
- Ford Model T. The Model T was built from 1908 to 1927 and was the most common car in America in the mid-1920s.
- Flapper fashion. Cloche hats, shorter hemlines and drop-waist dresses define mid-1920s women's fashion.
- Straw boaters. Flat-topped straw boater hats were a summer favorite for men.
- Telephone poles. Telephone lines on wooden poles were a normal sight in American towns by the 1920s.
- The horse-drawn wagon. Horses kept working alongside cars for decades; many dairies used horse-drawn milk wagons into the 1940s.
What we kept out
No traffic lights, no neon signs, no painted road markings or crosswalk stripes, no TV antennas (regular TV broadcasting came later), and no readable signs. Only one thing in the picture is allowed to be out of place.
The answer
Show the hidden modern object (spoiler)
The modern object is a camera drone. Experimental quadrotors actually flew in the 1920s (Étienne Oehmichen's flew in France in 1924), but they were huge, crewed machines. Small battery-powered camera drones arrived in the 2010s.
Hint, if you just want a nudge: Look up. Not everything in the sky is a cloud.
